This course helps you understand the mechanisms that genuinely shape sports development in Africa: governance, infrastructure, funding, public policy, competitions, training, inclusion and the sports economy. It is set against a backdrop of limited budgets, a heavy concentration of facilities, uneven levels of governance and frequent reliance on external funding. The course shows how to move beyond an approach focused solely on infrastructure or sporting results, and instead analyse the whole ecosystem: grassroots participation, coaching and supervision, facilities, competitions and recurring funding. It also enables you to evaluate sports policies, better understand the role of the state, federations, local authorities and international partners, identify funding that genuinely builds capacity, and turn sporting opportunities into sustainable projects.

What this course covers
Sports Development in Africa: Challenges, Policies and Opportunities is an online UpSkills course in Sports Management, organised into 5 modules, 24 lessons and 3h 9m of content. Each sequence pairs theory with hands-on practice so that what you learn transfers directly to a real professional setting.
By the end of this programme you will be able to diagnose a national or regional sporting ecosystem by analysing participation, coaching, facilities, competitions, governance and funding. These skills are built up gradually across the course, consolidating the fundamentals before moving on to more advanced material.
The learning path opens with “Block 01. Seeing the sports system as it really works” and closes with “Quiz”, taking in “Block 01. Reading sports policy and the real money before you act”, “Block 03. Turning opportunities into concrete levers for growth” and “Block 04. Building a sustainable, sovereign sports development strategy” along the way. The sequence is designed so each module builds on the one before it.
This course is aimed at learners at intermediate level looking to build their skills in Sports Management. It suits both individual upskilling and a company-led development plan, and needs no special software or equipment to follow.
