About

Detailed Presentation

This specialist course sets out to transform occupational health services — often seen as purely administrative bodies — into genuinely operational prevention systems. It tackles the major issue of "administrative drift", where issuing fitness certificates takes the place of real protection for workers. The programme teaches you how to move from standardised screening to targeted medical surveillance grounded in the reality of the workplace (mines, construction sites, plantations, factories). Participants will learn to map critical exposures that are often underestimated (musculoskeletal disorders, psychosocial risks, chronic chemical exposure) and to treat regulation not as a compliance ceiling but as a minimum floor on which to build a robust occupational health strategy. The approach draws on international standards (ILO, WHO, ISO 45001) while adapting them to the socio-economic and legislative realities of French-speaking sub-Saharan Africa.

Overview

What this course covers

Occupational Health: Prevention, Regulation and Practice is an online UpSkills course in Health & Social Care, organised into 6 modules, 29 lessons and 7h 5m of content. Each sequence pairs theory with hands-on practice so that what you learn transfers directly to a real professional setting.

By the end of this programme you will be able to assess how effective a service is: identify the symptoms of a purely administrative service and understand why it fails to protect employees. These skills are built up gradually across the course, consolidating the fundamentals before moving on to more advanced material.

The learning path opens with “BLOCK 1 - Understanding the real-world context” and closes with “QUIZ”, taking in “BLOCK 1 - Reading occupational risks”, “BLOCK 3 - Deciding and acting appropriately” and “BLOCK 4 – Managing for the long term” along the way. The sequence is designed so each module builds on the one before it.

This course is aimed at learners at intermediate level looking to build their skills in Health & Social Care. It suits both individual upskilling and a company-led development plan, and needs no special software or equipment to follow.

The programme is led by L'équipe d'experts Up Skills; you learn at your own pace, with no fixed schedule, from desktop, tablet or mobile; an UpSkills certificate is issued once you complete the course.

What you'll learn

Key Objectives

Assess how effective a service is: identify the symptoms of a purely administrative service and understand why it fails to protect employees.

Master the regulatory framework: apply the ILO conventions (C155, C161, C187) and national labour codes.

Map occupational risks: assess real exposures (noise, silica dust, pesticides, solvents) without selection bias.

Spot weak signals: detect emerging conditions (silicosis, hearing loss, chronic poisoning) before they become irreversible.

Prioritise and decide: use ranking methods to choose between technical, organisational and human prevention measures.

Manage with data: put in place key performance indicators (KPIs) that measure real health impact, not just the number of medical appointments.

Manage legal liability: understand the legal framework governing unfitness for work, workplace accidents and occupational diseases in order to protect both the company and the worker.
